You can feel the heaviness in the air.

The high particulate matter is not only a problem in winters though, it is a problem all around the year. One of my recent office was in a high rise building, and my desk was near a glass wall overlooking a large playground outside. The buildings across the playground were visible but the buildings further were usually blurry. Seemed usual. One day (not in winter), it had rained in the afternoon, and I happened to be at my desk just as the rain had stopped. To my surprise I could see the buildings across the playground very clearly but even the buildings which were few kilometers further were visible crystal clear. The rain had brought the particulate matter down with it. I was standing there looking out, when my boss stopped by and he also immediately noticed the enhanced visibility. We both stood there enjoying the view, discussing how this is now such a rare view in Delhi NCR, and how things have worsened over the years.

In winters people start wearing pollution masks outside. Several companies have started distributing those N95 masks in winters, to their employees. But the worrying thing is that the air pollution is quite high even in other seasons. Nobody wears N95 masks in summers. I guess because there is no dense smog in summer. ‘Can’t see problem, so there is no problem’ seems to be the case.

I wanted to take a ‘data analysis’/’data visualization’ approach to see what is happening. I started looking for datasets for analyzing. I found data available from 1987 to 2015, on a government’s ‘open data’ website. Unfortunately its quality was not great (I talk about it in the ‘quality’ section of my previous post titled ‘Data Discussion‘). I kept looking elsewhere, and found some data on the ‘Central Pollution Control Board’ site. This data had better quality.

I live in a neighboring town of New Delhi, So I thought of analyzing the situation between my town (Ghaziabad) and New Delhi. Air quality is usually gauged my measuring key air pollutants that pose health risks. The primary pollutants are,

particulate matter (PM)

(PM2.5) – Fine Particulate Matter

(PM10) – Coarse Particulate Matter

ozone (O3)

nitrogen dioxide (NO2)

sulfur dioxide (SO2).

I download the data only for PM2.5 and PM10, and focused only on the particulate matter(PM2.5 and PM10). Here is the analysis/visualization, and some noticeable inferences and observations.

I analyzed the data for four nearby weather stations (AnandVihar, Vasundhara, Indirapuram, SanjayNagar). In the map below, New Delhi is to the left end, and my hometown(Ghaziabad) is on the right end, with the four weather stations in between.

Each red dot is a day’s average PM (2.5 / 10) value.

The Blue line in each figure is the ‘World Health Organization’ (WHO) guideline value for permissible particulate matter. (reference)

(PM2.5) – 25 μg/m3 (24-hour mean)

(PM10) – 50 μg/m3 (24-hour mean)

PM2.5 and PM10 daily values, for four nearby weather stations (2009-2019)

Four nearby weather stations on a map (Left End: New Delhi ; Right End: Ghaziabad)

Inferences and Observations :-

Going by the availability of data points, AnandVihar seems to be the oldest weather station among the four, as it has data for several previous years. Vasundhara was the next weather station to be constructed, followed by Indirapuram and SanjayNagar.

If we look at 2019 year, we see that the PM values are high across the year, and not just in winters. So mask wearing people should wear it all year round

It is worrying that the PM values are higher than WHO guidelines seemingly constantly, in the recent years. But the more worrying thing is ‘higher by how much?’. AnandVihar and Vasundhara, the PM values are mostly 10x times the WHO guideline. That is hazardous !

Another interesting inference comes to light, if we see the PM visualization, and the weather station map visualization in conjunction. The more you move towards Delhi (right to left), the more polluted the air is. Conversely, suburban cities seem to have better air.

The air situation in Delhi NCR is bad, and I am sure that the other metro cities are no better. I hope the situation will improve, but I am not sure how or when.

Data based analysis of the increasing PM2.5 / PM10 levels, and the declining Air Quality, of Delhi NCR.

[9
34,36,35,21,44,27,22,38,39,31,40,29,45,32,30,41,43,42,37,10,33
